A better answer to, “How are you?”

Every day when I go into work I get asked by coworkers and clients, “How are you?” I usually respond, “Good it’s just another day at the office”, or “Livin’ the dream!” Those are humorous and acceptable responses. I have learned from watching others, if you give a negative answer, the consequences might not go in your favor. At one establishment I previously was employed, the owner asked a worker how she was doing. She replied, ” I will be better when I leave here.” At the end of her shift she was directed to go into the office and was told she was being let go. The owner reasoned that since she indicated she didn’t like her job, she didn’t need to keep working there.

I have met people who for whatever reason think they can’t be fired. Sometimes it is because they know the boss, they have worked there a long time, they are part of a union, or any one of a number of reasons. But those people usually end up getting fired. There are no guarantees in the workplace. If management is looking to get rid of you, they will find a reason. If you value your paycheck, it’s best to play along even when things aren’t going your way.
