Walking

I was walking into the library and noticed a man about my age several steps behind me who walked with a cane. When I got to the entrance I opened the door and held it for him. As he approached me he smiled and said thank you. I told him, “Well you are walking with three legs,” to which he laughed.

We expect when we “get old” our bodies will start rebelling and we won’t be able to do the things we used to. Nothing is promised in life. It throws you curve balls when you least expect it. That man could be younger than me, but appear my age. And I don’t know why he is walking with a cane. It could be an injury, he could be recovering from surgery, or he could have a disease. But it doesn’t matter. Getting around for him isn’t easy. And I’m sure when he starts his day he has to plan where he is going, what he would like to do, and if he is going to be able to maneuver around because of his condition. Something that me, a person with two strong legs and feet doesn’t think about. But I’m glad I stopped to look behind me and saw him. Doing something simple like holding the door kept him from trying to figure out how to keep his balance while getting inside. So the thing I have decided to be grateful for today, that I have decided to share with everyone, is that I can walk. Something that I will never again take for granted.

Thank you for reading and have a blessed day,
