I went to the drive thru before work this morning. The employee who took my order didn’t greet me and their voice was flat. I pulled around to the window and could tell the lady had an attitude. Not toward me, but something was off. I handed her my money and told her to keep the change for someone who needs it, or in case her drawer was short. As soon as I said the second part, her demeanor changed. She smiled at me and said thanks. I told her I have worked in retail so I know the count at the end of the shift is important.
Working in fast food isn’t glamorous but it’s a job people take in order to pay their bills. Unfortunately when you work in that industry, the general public puts you down and treats you as someone who is meaningless and stupid. That is not true. Sometimes when you are job searching, that is all that is available. Or if you have other commitments, that might be the only place that will work with your schedule. But whatever the reason, I’m glad that by me acknowledging she has a responsibility, it gave her some validation.
