Tainted drink

One night when I was in my 20’s, a friend of mine and I were hanging out at her apartment. Bored with what was on tv, we decided to go out and chose a tavern not far from where she lived. Neither of us had been there before. We walked in, took seats at the bar, and ordered drinks. At first nothing seemed unusual. Several people were there drinking and smoking cigarettes. The corner where the pool table was had a group engaged in a game, and few college type guys were playing darts. But despite the relaxed crowd, there was a weird vibe. I couldn’t’ put my finger on it, but something felt off. Within a few moments a man who looked to be in his 30’s took the seat beside me and tried to start a conversation.
I didn’t feel like making new friends that night so I didn’t engage with him and hoped my lack of enthusiasm would send him away. But when I turned my head to show disinterest, I heard my rum
and coke fizz. He put something in my drink! I turned back to look at him and he was
staring at the baseball game on the overhead tv. My friend had been standing behind me
watching the guys play darts and nervously asked if I was ready to go. I told her I was done.
I pushed the tainted to the edge of the bar, gave the barmaid a cold
stare, shook my head, and we left. When we got outside my friend
asked if I knew something had been put in my drink. I said yes that is why I hadn’t
finished it. She said she had heard my drink fizz also. Once inside the car, we locked the
doors and got out of there as fast as we could. We never went back and never spoke
of that night again.
I shudder to think of what could have happened. Not just to me, but my friend
also. I was the one targeted, but she could have been harmed to. By the grace of God, my attention was not diverted when I looked away. And there was the possibility the other
patrons in the bar were aware of what the guy who spiked my drink was doing. The
bartender could have been playing a part in the deceit as well. Despite it was a
woman, it doesn’t mean she was looking out for me or would have helped if I asked her to.
There is no shortage of people in this world waiting for an opportunity to do something
shady. But luckily we made it out unscathed.
